ARTICLE: What is Compassionate Communication — and Why Do We Need It?

By Alex Norman, Certified NVC Trainer & Narara Local
Ever wished you could say what’s really on your mind — without making things worse?
Communication is at the heart of every relationship, but when tensions rise, it’s easy to shut down or say things we later regret. Most of us simply weren’t given the tools to express ourselves honestly and compassionately at the same time.
That’s where Nonviolent Communication (NVC) comes in.
A Pathway to Connection
Also known as Compassionate Communication, NVC is a powerful framework for expressing ourselves with clarity, listening with empathy, and navigating the inevitable challenges of human relationships — without blame, shame, or defensiveness.
Developed by psychologist and peacemaker Dr. Marshall Rosenberg (1934-2015), NVC is now practiced in schools, workplaces, and communities across more than 65 countries.
“What I want in my life is compassion, a flow between myself and others based on a mutual giving from the heart.”
— Dr. Marshall Rosenberg, Founder of NVC
Why NVC Matters
Despite our natural inclination toward care and cooperation, many of us have absorbed communication habits that create disconnection. We’ve learned to:
- Label and diagnose others
- Use blame or shame to express distress
- Deny our own needs or project them onto others
These patterns often leave us feeling unheard, misunderstood, or reactive.
NVC offers a radical shift — one that prioritises connection first, and trusts that sustainable solutions can emerge from that space.
The Four Key Ingredients
The NVC process is simple, (though not always easy). It centres on four core components:
- Observations – What did I see or hear, without interpretation or judgment?
- Feelings – How did that affect me emotionally?
- Needs – What human values or longings are alive in me right now?
- Requests – What specific, doable action might support connection or resolution?
These elements help transform even the most difficult conversations into opportunities for clarity, compassion, and collaboration.
“Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space lies our freedom and power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.”
— Viktor Frankl
Beyond a Communication Tool
NVC is often described as a language of the heart. But it’s also a deep inner practice. As we learn to name our feelings and needs with more precision and compassion, we develop emotional clarity, resilience, and self-responsibility.
Alex Norman, a local resident of the Central Coast, is a certified NVC trainer and Emotionally Focused Therapist with a passion for helping people break free from unhelpful patterns and build healthier, more fulfilling relationships. A performer-turned-practitioner, she brings warmth, creativity, and grounded insight to her work.
